Taming Inflation using facilities of Indian Railways

Taming Inflation using facilities of Indian Railways

Let me start with a phrase “अन्नदाता सुखी भव”

Inflation is nothing but cost of living measured over a period of time & it tends to increase every year. Do we have a solution for this menace, I am sure that we have. Let us see how we can utilize the facilities of Indian Railways optimally to reduce the burden of inflation on common man. Today Land is next to gold, and this is abundant with railways. How are we going to utilize this for the benefit of every citizen.

Let us look at the Farming sector, which is the most unorganized sector in India. The Farming sector contributes to roughly around 20% of GDP of India, and is plagued with too many shortcomings like insufficient monsoon, pests, improper care of the grains etc. the last portion is of particular relevance here, since the food grains are not stored properly, losses are around 6 – 8% due to this factor.

Here is where Indian Railways can pitch in, we can think of building world class Storage facility, and leasing these to the farmers at nominal rates for couple of days till the farmer gets good rates for his produce. We already have plans to renovate 400 stations in the coming year, why not get tenders to build 100 stations with this facility. Identify key regions in India where farm produce is high. Plan and build facilities in these areas, and I am sure in 5 years time frame we can rein in Inflation and make tremendous progress. This is going to help in 2 ways, 1st storage is going to be assured (safety of crop is ensured), 2nd is that transportation of these crops is also going to be very easy, since no other network is capable of delivering crops to end user in the shortest possible time, as compared to Indian Railways.

Infact this can be extrapolated to transport of goods within the city as well. Today any major city having population of 50 lakhs and above is planning for building a metro, which is no doubt going to improve the commute with in the city. Why not attach 2-3 compartments in each train, for transporting food grains and poultry. I am sure this will be beneficial for every major city in our nation.
